The value of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in the liberal arts is typically assessed in terms of how well students are being taught “values.” The goal is to make sure that their education and the skills they learn will equip them for a responsible life in which responsibility will enable them to feel empowered. While to some extent, in varied degrees, this may be true, a critical enabler and a strong source of agency is the notion that students are not passive recipients of a value system deemed socially acceptable. When people take on the role of active social code judges, when they give themselves the skills to question concepts of value, and when they dig deep into the motivations behind their decisions, a liberating utility and beauty arises.

Academic life at NISER is heavily influenced by the humanities and social sciences, which include the academic fields of economics, English, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. For undergraduate science majors enrolled in the Integrated Five-Year MSc programme, these courses are part of the prerequisite listings. The PhD programmes offered by the school’s several departments are nearing completion and are scheduled to start the 2015–16 academic year. The School has a great deal of liberty when it comes to creating required and optional courses for the student body, with the main goal being to promote an understanding of the social context that supports scientific cultures. The complementarity of the faculty’s research efforts improves the courses. The institution actively participates in extra curricular activities.
